An iPad Kiosk at Brookhaven Marketplace Makes Food Shopping Convenient2 min read
Brookhaven Marketplace wants to “put the excitement back into food shopping” by making it “both convenient and fun!” The three-store, independent family retailer says, “If you don’t find yourself looking forward to a shopping trip to Brookhaven Marketplace, then we are coming up a bit short on that goal, and that is something we hope to rectify very soon!” A new mobile iPad kiosk is helping the retailer reach its goal.
If you’ve ever had to stand in line to order from a grocer’s deli or bakery department (or, even worse, at both) – especially on the weekend or just before a major holiday, like Thanksgiving and Christmas, you know that standing in line is neither convenient nor fun. To rectify the problem, the retailer is trialing a new web-based, mobile iPad kiosk at it Mokena, Illinois, location to bust lines and provide shoppers with, not one, but two additional channels for placing orders in its fresh food departments (deli, bakery, meat, seafood, prepared foods, etc.).
Brookhaven’s mobile iPad kiosk doubles as a face-to-face (“F2F”) order-taking system which employees can use to take deli, bakery, and other fresh food orders. To maximize customer convenience and minimize wait times, employees using the F2F system also wear a wireless, belt-mounted, micro-thermal printer to print a shopper’s order-ticket, so shoppers don’t have to wait for an associate to go to back behind the counter to retrieve the ticket from the department’s central printer.
While many customers place their orders directly on the iPad kiosk, there are times when long lines may begin to form at, say, the deli. When they do, a store associate takes the iPad out to the line to take orders from waiting shoppers. After inputting the customer’s order on the iPad, the employee instantly prints the order-ticket from the wireless, belt-mounted printer, and hands it to the customer. With their order-tickets in hand, customers are free to do the rest of their grocery shopping while their fresh food order is being prepared. When they have finished, shoppers simply stop by the kiosk staging area to pick up their completed order.
Customers at the Mokena store have been very receptive to the new iPad kiosk, and Brookhaven’s General Manager, John Peter (“JP”) Bertakis, says the F2F system lets the store be proactive and enhances customer service. It also helps the store keep good on its promise to make grocery shopping at Brookhaven convenient and fun.
