Turnberry Resort in Scotland Introduces iPad Menu Wine Lists3 min read

The Ayrshire golf resort (of Turnberry) is located about 1.6 kilometers from the ruins of the castle of the esteemed Robert the Bruce, located on Scotland’s gorgeous southern coast. The Turnberry Resort first was opened in 1906, and has offered a traditional printed wine list that features all of their world famous selections. Run by Head Chef Justin Galea, who is well known on the island as one of the premier chefs – not to mention also being internationally recognized. The resort has opted to make a rather vast change to improve its offerings to guests. They recently converted their more than 100 year old paper wine list to an iPad menu instead. The resort’s exclusive “1906” restaurant and the “Ailsa Bar and Lounge” will be featuring an iPad menu – the first two eateries in Scotland to do so.

Ayrshire golf resort also plans to add the iPad menu to other restaurants it features, including Dual in the Sun sports bar, the James Miller Room (which offers formal dining), the Grand Tea Loung (which offers afternoon tea time and lunch daily) and Tappie Toorie restaurant in the Clubhouse. The news of adding an iPad menu also pairs nicely with the announcement of the Luxury Collection Resort’s launch of a line of “legendary golfer’s wines.” The wines will feature decedent selection from golf legends such as Arnold Palmer, John Daly and Retief Goosen, all which will be featured on the new and lavish iPad menu.

The Turnberry iPad menu will be loaded with features to entice guests – including the ability to read detailed descriptions about the vintage, history and high and low notes as well as tasting notes and flavors including pairing suggestions of each wine. It’s important to note that each iPad menu will not offer internet access, unlike what you would find on an iPad menu in the US. There are rumors that in the near future the resort will add a Facebook, Twitter and news feed to the iPad menu, however.

Turnberry’s Director of Operations, Ralph Porciani, is confident that the new addition of the iPad menu will allow for guests to better select a wine that they will enjoy; as most guests are not very knowledgeable about wines, and are apt to admit that to the wine steward. Since more than half of the resort’s guests are technology savvy, Porciani feels that the iPad menu will help to better educate them about wines and allow for them to more easily select a wine that will best suit their tastes. The iPad menu is meant to improve service, according to Porciani, and not to replace the staff or the intimate functions that they offer to guests who are staying at the resort.
